Hello and Welcome to The Journey of Jazz!
Thank you for joining us on this Journey!
We are so glad you’re here, and we hope you’re ready for a great time. This Big Band is packed with talent, joy, and a relentless energy that will keep you in awe. The concert we’re about to share with you is more than just a tour through some of the greatest jazz music or a chance to hear your favorite piece performed live. It’s a celebration of community, camaraderie, and the power of music to bring us closer together.
Jazz is an expansive, colorful, expressive, improvisational, and nearly-impossible-to-define art form. Take the earliest blues, a dash of ragtime, a healthy dose of African American spirituals, mix in some daring influences from Cuba and the Haitian-Creole sounds and culture of New Orleans – then infuse it all with some of the most explosively creative and innovative artists of the 20th century, and you get a musical genre that has changed the world. And not just one genre, technically: blues, ragtime, jazz, swing, bop, bebop, free jazz, fusion, funk… They all share the same family tree.
And that’s the enthralling journey we’re going to take today. We’ll trace the line of innovation and expression from the early blues and ragtime of W.C. Handy through the era-defining music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie to major forces that helped the music evolve – John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and more – all the way to the 1960s and 1970s where there is no question that we don’t have Stevie Wonder or Earth, Wind & Fire if we didn’t first have Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, or countless other jazz musicians who paved the way.
Whether this is your first experience with Central Florida Community Arts or your hundredth, we hope you leave inspired and uplifted today. If you’re curious to know more about us or to get involved, please check us out online at CFCArts.com. Grab a ticket for an upcoming show, make a gift to our scholarship drive, learn about our programs, or sign up to be a part of something big this fall.
We’re committed to building community, putting down deep roots, and making Central Florida an even more creative and vibrant place to call home – and we hope to see you again soon!
Enjoy the show!
