Hello and Welcome to Hadestown: Teen Edition!
Imagine the way the world could be… in spite of the way that it is.
That is the gift that our main character, Orpheus, carries with him. He brings hope, even in the face of despair, that spring will come again. That the world will come alive again. That there may, someday, be a better, fairer world for us all.
In choosing to direct and produce Hadestown: Teen Edition this season with the CFCArts Youth Theatre Programs, I dug into the content and discovered that the teen edition was, realistically, almost exactly, beat-for-beat, the same score and libretto that is currently used on Broadway and professional touring stages. There are a couple of ever-so-slightly changed keys, one dropped key change, and the option to change a couple of words (although we opted not to do so). Otherwise, this is every bit the challenging, confrontational show that is performed by adult actors on professional stages across the world.
However, the Teen Edition of Hadestown does have one key difference: the children.
This production comes at an uncertain and unprecedented time in our nation and our world. Regardless of your personal beliefs and convictions, I think we can all agree that at times it feels like we are standing on shifting sands. It can feel unsettling, uncomfortable, and frightening. But where I have seen hope bloom is in the rehearsal room.
If you’re ever feeling short on hope, just arrange a visit to CFCArts on almost any weeknight and you’ll see what I mean. I often tell people, “The best kids in Central Florida all just happen to make their way to CFCArts.” And I mean that sincerely. Are they talented and hardworking? Absolutely. You’re about to see that for yourself. But so, so much more importantly: They are kind. They are bold. They are brave.
They make me proud every single day. They are the gift of hope that we all need.
They make me believe that maybe it will turn out this time. And when they’re in charge? I have no doubt that it will. In the meantime, we’ll keep telling the tale. We’ll keep giving them a place to belong, grow, and shine. Dear audience, thank you for being a part of that.
See you on the underside,
Leah Porrata
