Hello and Welcome!
Hello and welcome to what promises to be a wonderfully funny afternoon. Probably.
I say ‘probably’ because I don’t actually know what you’ll be seeing onstage, since most of the performance will be improvised on the spot, right in front of you. And me.
But that certainly doesn’t mean we haven’t been preparing. Since January, our Narrators class has been practicing whimsical-sounding improv games like Soundball, Questions Only, Word-at-a-time, DooRonRon, and Bouncer. All of this has been guided by professional improviser and teacher Anthony Francis, who is also today’s MC. Anthony assures me we are ready for our prime time debut, even though the show starts at 3:00. Though, to be fair, he doesn’t know what’s going to happen onstage either! One thing he and I both know is that our comedy is going to be greatly enhanced by musical director Ralph Krumins, who – no kidding – will also be improvising on the keyboard in support of the actors.
However, beyond the laughs, improvisational comedy also has some serious benefits: It boosts creativity, confidence, and interpersonal skills, while decreasing stress and social anxiety.* And when seniors get involved in improv, the benefits multiply: Seniors report becoming more positive, better listeners and communicators, and more confident in their ability to handle situations or changes. Pretty good for a comedy class!
To help introduce the basics of improv, we’ve added a little explanatory dialogue to the show, as well as some fantastic monologues written by the Narrators themselves which speak to the joy of defying expectations and taking a leap of faith. Plus, we’re pleased to feature a piece by professional playwright Kayla Cagan. And I am really excited about our collaboration with Australian playwright Jane Cafarella, who not only allowed us to use several of her monologues and plays but also wrote two pieces especially for the Narrators. Please take a moment to visit Jane’s website at janecafarella.com.au.
I sincerely hope you have as much fun today as we have had preparing the show for you, and that, if you’re a senior, you’ll consider joining Narrators in the fall. You’ll never know what we’ll be up to!
