Hello and Welcome!
We are so glad you’re joining us today! We realize there are many other places you could be, and the fact that you’re here—supporting live music but also, and more importantly, supporting our members—means so much. Thank you for choosing to spend your Saturday with us.
The ensemble you’re experiencing today is absolutely remarkable. Just over 200 musicians and singers will perform with more joy, talent, and power than you can imagine. This incredible group is made up of people just like you—friends and neighbors from across Central Florida who gather once a week to make music, have fun, and make this a better place to call home.
If you’ve been to many CFCArts concerts before, you’ve probably noticed that our strength in numbers and goal of making live music fun and approachable means we lean into pops and film music. Today, though, our members are presenting a breathtaking classical concert. Glorious is a celebration of the splendor that life has to offer. This uplifting event is designed to sweep you away from the everyday and immerse you in the sheer joy and awe of musical grandeur.
Glorious allows us to create a compelling experience where the power of music and the talent and passion of two of CFCArts’ most dynamic ensembles truly shine. It’s a chance for our community to come together in celebration, find joy, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day.
We want this concert to be accessible and welcoming to everyone here, no matter your familiarity with classical music. Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or new to the genre, this concert will provide an engaging and enriching experience for all. And you’ll probably recognize many familiar pieces you’ve heard in movies, commercials, and throughout pop culture!
Please sit back and enjoy your time with us, as we know we’ll enjoy sharing this space with you. We have many more chances for you to connect, laugh, relax, and grow with us! Visit CFCArts.com to learn more about the work we are doing in our Central Florida community and to get your tickets for many of our thrilling upcoming performances.
While the music and the quality of the performance are incredibly important to us (we do want you to have a great time, after all!), the single most important aspect of this concert is the echoing beauty and unforgettable connection of creating a sense of community with so many musicians—so many wonderful people—from right here in Central Florida. Thank you for being a part of this experience with us!

About the Music
Overture Festivo, Op. 96
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
This vibrant and jubilant work, full of rapid brass fanfares and energetic rhythms, is often performed at celebratory events and was chosen as the signature musical theme of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow five years after the composer’s death. Let the lively character lift your spirits and invigorate your soul.
Splendor from Illuminare
Elaine Hagenberg (1979-present)
Elaine Hagenberg’s “Illuminare” is a five-movement work, with the first movement being majestic and bright. Its melodies combine orchestral flurries and choral heralds through joyful rhythmic momentum. The piece evokes themes of darkness overcome by beauty, goodness, and hope.
For the Beauty of the Earth
John Rutter (1945-present)
John Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth" is a choral anthem celebrating the wonders of nature and the gratitude we feel for them. It is frequently performed at weddings and thanksgiving services. The serene and uplifting melody provides a sense of tranquility and appreciation for the world around us.
Simple Gifts
Joseph Brackett, Jr. (1797-1882)
arr. Derric Johnson
"Simple Gifts" is a Shaker hymn composed by Joseph Brackett and widely recognized through Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring." Its simple, repetitive melody and lyrics celebrate simplicity and humility, offering a calming and restorative listening experience. Shaker hymns play a central and multifaceted role in Shaker worship, serving as a vital component of the religious and communal life of the Shaker community. These hymns are not merely songs of praise and devotion; they are integral to the spiritual, social, and emotional fabric of Shaker worship.
Overture to Egmont, Op. 84
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Ludwig van Beethoven’s "Egmont Overture" is a dramatic and heroic work, frequently used in films and TV to underscore moments of triumph and struggle. Its powerful themes convey a sense of resilience and determination, providing an emotionally stirring and motivational listening experience.
Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47
IV. Allegro non troppo
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
arr. Stephen Bulla
The "Finale" from Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 is a triumphant and vigorous piece, symbolizing resilience and victory. Known for its dramatic and stirring conclusion, it has been featured in films and concerts to evoke powerful emotions. Its dynamic energy can be both invigorating and cathartic.
Gloria
I. Allegro vivace
John Rutter (1945-present)
John Rutter’s "Gloria" is a three-movement work, with the first movement being particularly exuberant and joyful. It is known for its lively rhythms and bright brass sections. The piece is often performed during festive occasions, and its invigorating energy can uplift and inspire.
Bacchanale from Samson et Dalila
Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
The "Bacchanale" from Camille Saint-Saëns’ opera "Samson et Dalila" is a lively and exotic dance. Its rhythmic energy and vivid orchestration evoke a sense of celebration and revelry. While often used in dynamic scenes in films, it can also provide an exhilarating listening experience.
Nimrod from Enigma Variations
Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
arr. Mark Barnard
Edward Elgar’s "Nimrod" from the "Enigma Variations" is renowned for its profound and reflective beauty. Often performed at solemn occasions, it has been used in numerous films and state ceremonies. The piece's serene and contemplative nature makes it deeply restorative and comforting.
Each of the Enigma Variations is titled with a name or initials that identify the person being captured by the music, Elgar's editor and publisher Augustus J. Jaeger in this case. Biblically, Nimrod is a great hunter of the Old Testament, therefore representing its muse through a play on words: Jäger in German means 'hunter.'
Going Home
William Arms Fisher (1861-1948) / Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)
Based on Symphony No. 9 in E minor (“From the New World”), Op. 95: II: Largo
"Going Home" is a spiritual adapted from the Largo of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9. by William Arms Fisher, who was one of Dvořák’s students. The melody shared by "Going Home" and the Largo is deeply moving and has been used in various films, TV shows, and memorial services. The piece offers a sense of comfort and solace, evoking themes of peace and the journey to a restful place.
Photo: U.S. Navy CPO Graham Jackson, with tears of grief, plays "Going Home," as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's body is carried from Warm Springs, Ga., where he died.
Sing Gently
Eric Whitacre (1970-present)
Eric Whitacre's "Sing Gently" is a beautiful choral piece composed in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Its soothing harmonies and gentle melodies offer a sense of peace and unity, making it a comforting piece for times of reflection and healing. The virtual choir performance has been widely shared, symbolizing hope and connection.
Vetrate di Chiesa (Church Windows)
IV. San Gregorio Magno (St. Gregory the Great)
Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936)
orch. Julian Bond
Ottorino Respighi’s "Church Windows" is a stunning orchestral work that transforms the beauty of stained glass into sound. The piece depicts four different scenes of religious inspiration. Its rich orchestration and evocative melodies create a serene and majestic atmosphere, offering both peace and a deep sense of wonder.
