Hello and Welcome!
“Together, we swim together.”
Hello, aquatic and semi-aquatic friends and patrons! Whether you are joining us in the Big Blue World for the very first time, have gotten teary-eyed on more than one occasion watching the finale of this production on a Disney Parks’ Live Entertainment stage, or you can still remember the last time you watched this fish “tail” on your home VCR, we are so happy to have you here with us.
Dear readers, this is a story that has meant more to me than I can possibly express. I began (quite obnoxiously) quoting this beloved Pixar movie after only my second viewing of it when it came to theaters in 2003. When I was not much older than the students you see onstage today, I saw this very production come to life at none other than Disney’s Animal Kingdom on a family vacation and became even more hooked (pun intended), complete with my own purchase of the original cast recording on CD when those were still a thing. Over the years, I have seen myself in all of these colorful characters, from Dory’s forgetfulness to Nemo’s curiosity. The message of embracing your true self in the midst of new challenges, the great unknown, and even with a few sharks and jellyfish is one that has always touched my heart and pushed me forward in every facet of life, just as I hope it touches yours when we all swim away later today.
You know that saying “it takes a village”? Well, here it takes an ocean. The community that has been forged and strengthened through this story is something that I am endlessly grateful for. Being able to witness these young performers either find themselves within their characters, have their eyes light up when they bring their own puppet to life, or just excitedly run over to their friend for a big hug because they didn’t realize they had rehearsal together that day are just a small handful of the many goosebump-worthy moments that make you think, “This is why stories like these matter.” Thank you to this cast and their families for bringing so much love into this production and for trusting in the journey we all got to experience together. A special thank you to my fin-tastic team of artists, teachers, designers, and technicians, who fielded all of my hopeful what-ifs with equally ecstatic what-if-we-tried-this-toos. And quite possibly the biggest thank you to my family, who have listened to me recite this musical since our Walt Disney World trip all the way back in 2008 and will always be worth swimming across any ocean for.
There are many different creatures swimmin’ round the sea that make up our world today. From our mischievous school of fish friends at the drop off to our quirky tank gang on the shore and all the way to the EAC with our most laid-back turtles, I hope you all are able to see yourselves somewhere in the “big ole blue” and take that bubble of excitement home with you. Here, there is never a “wrong” way to explore what’s waiting out there for all of us, only many different ways to get to where we want to go, as long as we all remember to swim together.
