Hello and Welcome to Dreaming Through the Decades!
As the co-director of UpBeat!, I am so excited to welcome you to this special performance and journey through the decades. This show is more than a celebration of some familiar faces and moments across time; it is a testament to the power of storytelling, connection, and growth.
Throughout this season’s rehearsal process, we have focused on one of the most essential elements of theatre: communication. Whether it’s how we connect with one another as an ensemble, how we respond to direction, or how we share a story with an audience, communication is at the heart of everything we do. We always encourage our members to remain present, listen actively, and support each other both on and off stage.
Equally important is our members’ understanding of show flow and run of show. Knowing where we are in the performance, what comes next, and how our roles contribute to the larger picture ensures that our production runs smoothly and confidently. Every transition, entrance, and moment matters, and grasping this concept makes for a stronger performer and team player.
We have also spent time strengthening key technical theatre skills that elevate our performance skills such as character development, projection, and enunciation. These skills are not just tools for this performance, they are building blocks for our continued growth as performers and storytellers.
As we take the stage, we are reminded that we are part of something meaningful. We hope to share joy, memories, and imagination with our audience. We’ve prepared to put on the performance of a lifetime, support our fellow cast members, and most importantly, allow ourselves to enjoy the experience.
I am incredibly proud of the work our cast, crew, and creative teams have all put into this production. Thank you for your dedication, your creativity, and your willingness to dream.
We hope you enjoy every moment of Dreaming Through the Decades.
With appreciation,
Liv Rand

A Y2K Greeting from UpBeat! Jr.

Our journey this season has marked a time of growth and transition within the UpBeat! Jr. program. We were excited to welcome four new members alongside seven returning cast members, creating one of our largest UpBeat! Jr. casts to date. This season also brought exciting changes to our creative team, as I stepped into the role of director and welcomed Ms. Briahna as our music therapist, while Ms. Caroline took the season off to spend time with her new baby.
Like the adult program, our learning focus throughout the season centered around communication. Through our theatre training, performers explored the actor’s tool of the voice as a way to tell stories with confidence and clarity, with special emphasis on projection and enunciation. Our young performers especially enjoyed throwing their “vocal energy balls,” warming up their consonants, and making sure that Grandma Bitty could hear every word all the way from the back row.
Our social-emotional learning focus paralleled this theatrical work by encouraging cast members to discover and practice how they can use their own voices to express wants, needs, and ideas. Instructors began by modeling ways to communicate through both speech and song, then invited performers to contribute their own thoughts and experiences. It has been truly meaningful to watch these young artists strengthen their skills in self-expression, need recognition, and self-advocacy throughout the rehearsal process.
As always, our members also enjoyed selecting and developing their characters, inspired by the “not so long ago” era of Y2K. We hope you enjoy this nostalgic journey through favorite films, musicians, sports stars, pop culture icons, and animated characters from this unforgettable decade.
I could not be more proud of the dedication, creativity, and courage these young performers have shown both on and off the stage this season. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida for generously providing rehearsal space each week, to our incredibly supportive parents who are present at every rehearsal encouraging and uplifting our cast, and to all of you joining us today to celebrate the incredible work of these talented young performers.
We hope you use your voice to cheer us on as we go Dreaming Through the Decades.
Sincerely,
Christina Closs
