Music Therapy
CFCArts is proud to offer a Community Music Therapy Program led by Board-Certified Music Therapists.
What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is a Board-Certified health profession that uses evidence-based research to design music interventions for people of all ages and abilities to meet goals in a therapeutic setting. Goal areas include: Cognition, Communication, Physical/Motor Skills, Emotion, Socialization, Sensory Processing, and Musical.
What does a Music Therapy session look like?
Each session is designed and tailored to the individual needs and preferences of the client or group. Sessions will look different from person to person depending on their specific needs and goals. What sessions do have in common are the inclusion of music and goals determined by the music therapist and client.
Beginning a Session
To begin, your music therapist may open a session in one of the following ways:
- Singing an age appropriate "hello song" for group or client
- Verbal/musical group/client check-in
- Review of what happened in the last session
During a Session
During music therapy you and your therapist may do one or more of the following:
- Create music - You might compose music, write lyrics, or create new music together; you can even record a song you write
- Sing music - Use your voice to share a piece of music
- Listen to music - Enjoy your favorite music or discover new music
- Move to music - As simple as tapping your toes together or as complicated as a coordinated dance
- Discuss lyrics - Read or listen to the lyrics of a song and talk about their meaning
- Play an instrument - Use an instrument like a piano, guitar, drums, shakers etc. to make music together
- Play Music Games - Play games that include your favorite music, singing songs and playing instruments”
Ending a Session
To end a session and help the client transition out of the music therapy space and into the outside world, your music therapist may include:
- Singing an age appropriate "good-bye song" to group or client
- A closing verbal/music transition out of session
- A summary or recap of what happened
