Students in Grades 6 through 12 this school year: Audition for our advanced Youth Theatre Troupe Musical: Into the Woods!

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece… and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

Students must audition for this pre-professional advanced theatre group.

How to Prepare for Auditions (Required Grades 6-12)

  • Fill out your student’s registration form.
  • Headshots and resumes are encouraged (but not required) and can be emailed to theatre@cfcarts.com at least 24 hours prior to your audition in PDF, JPG, or PNG format. If emailed late or in a different format, we may not be able to access your resume. Please do not bring hard copies to your audition.
  • Please prepare and memorize two 16 to 32-bar selections from two contrasting musical theatre songs (1 uptempo, 1 ballad preferred) - one selection must be musically composed by Stephen Sondheim. Please do not sing selections from any version of Into the Woods. Selections from music that Stephen Sondheim wrote lyrics for but did not write music for, such as West Side Story or Gypsy, are not applicable.
  • Please bring sheet music with full piano accompaniment, three-hole-punched, double-sided, and in a three-ring binder. An accompanist will be provided. Tracks may not be used. Students may not sing a cappella (without accompaniment.) If you need assistance locating appropriate sheet music, please contact us at theatre@cfcarts.com at least 48 hours before your audition (but preferably sooner!) and we will help you.
  • All auditioners will participate in cold readings from Into the Woods, as well as possibly The Wind in the Willows even if not auditioning for that show. The scripts will be made available before auditions. Students do not need to memorize any part of the script or prepare a monologue.
  • Please bring a water bottle. Food and gum are not permitted.
  • Dance or athletic shoes required. No restrictive attire, open-toed shoes, flip-flops/sandals, heels, or skirts/dresses without leggings or shorts beneath.
  • Auditions, as well as rehearsals, are closed to parents and other visitors. For safety reasons, only students and approved staff/volunteers are permitted.
  • Students may choose to attend our Audition Prep Workshop on Wednesday, February 28, 5:30-7:30 PM at our audition and rehearsal location of First Congregational Church of Winter Park (225 S Interlachen Ave, Winter Park FL 32789.). Music Therapy

CFCArts Youth Theatre Programs are proud to have a fully licensed, board-certified Music Therapist involved in our programs! Our Music Therapist consults on curriculum development, trains our staff members with arts-based classroom management and intervention skills, and is available as a resource for students and staff alike throughout the rehearsal and show process as needed.

Service Project

Central Florida Community Arts exists to serve and build community through the arts. With our mission in mind, our Youth Theatre Program students for each production have the opportunity to participate in a service project to benefit another non-profit organization in Central Florida - and to build friendships and bond with their castmates! These service projects are carefully selected to align with the message of the story that our students are telling on stage.

Into the Woods shares the important message that “no one is alone”--life, with all of its twists and turns, is best experienced within a community, and that we all must make a decision to do our part for that community. For this show’s service project, CFCArts Youth Theatre Programs are proud to partner with the City of Orlando for their GreenUp Program, coming together this April for Earth Month to do our part to beautify and enhance our community’s health by planting new trees!
