Hello and Welcome to American Maestro: The Music of John Williams!
Thank you for joining us! We are so glad you’re here and we’re honored you’ve chosen to spend part of your weekend with us, celebrating community, live music, and the indelible impact of America’s greatest living composer.
The Music of John Williams is quite a lofty title to give a concert. No single concert experience can truly capture the breadth and scope of John Williams’ compositions or succinctly summarize his impact on film music, orchestral repertoire, and the American symphonic sound. Over a seven-decade career, he has provided the soundtrack to some of our most memorable moments and experiences. From the Olympics to nightly news broadcasts to Sunday night football to Superman, Indiana Jones, E.T., Harry Potter, Jaws, Hook, Jurassic Park (and so many more), it’s nearly impossible to imagine our world without his music stirring our emotions and sweeping us off on timeless adventures.
Williams is widely recognized as the most celebrated and awarded orchestral composer of the 20th (and 21st) century, proving that his music is not just commercially successful or emotionally impactful, but also highly regarded as an essential example of excellence. He has received 27 Grammy Awards, five Academy Awards, seven BAFTA Awards, three Emmy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards. With a total of 54 – yes fifty-four! – Academy Award nominations, he is the second-most nominated person in history, behind only Walt Disney. He is also the oldest Academy Award nominee in any category, having received a nomination at 91 years old.
In this concert, over 370 musicians – the largest symphony orchestra in the nation – are combining forces to present some of his most iconic and most joyous music. We’ll cover very familiar favorites – “The Superman March,” E.T., Indiana Jones, “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” Jurassic Park – and you’ll also experience some less-frequently-performed masterpieces that demonstrate Williams’ range, influence, and distinctly American sound. Each piece is powerful, beautiful, and thrilling in its own way, and it’s such a joy to be able perform them for you today.
We hope this concert inspires you, puts a smile on your face, brings you a little closer to your friends and family, and shows you that the talented and passionate musicians in this orchestra are a part of what makes Central Florida such a dynamic and vibrant place to call home. This is an experience you can only have here, and we’re so glad you’re having it with us.
Enjoy the show!
